The Laurelwood Nears Completion

The Laurelwood at Ponzi Vineyards at sunset

The Laurelwood at Ponzi Vineyards, our stunning new hospitality space, is nearing completion. The final details are coming together beautifully. The design and construction of The Laurelwood is by Fogelstrom Design Build. Architect Brett Fogelstrom also designed our tasting room and is the husband of Ponzi Vineyards President Anna Maria Ponzi. He shared with us a little bit about the elements of his design.

I have the pleasure to work with some of the best steel fabricators and finish carpenters in Portland and you can see their work here at Ponzi Vineyards. --Brett Fogelstrom

The Doors to The Founders Room

The custom oak pocket doors are [an] example of pulling together multiple talented people and creating something that has never existed before. For me personally, that process is pure joy. --Brett Fogelstrom

The Laurelwood at Ponzi Vineyards door detail

I try to expose connections/intersections of materials so that you can readily see and appreciate these materials and how exquisite they can be when in the hands of skilled craftsmen. This is really where one job will stand out above others, its always in the details! --Brett Fogelstrom

The Ceiling and Walls

The Laurelwood at Ponzi Vineyards wall and ceiling

I utilize steel as a structural element but also as a slender counterpoint to the mass of the concrete. The wood then comes along and warms everything up. The blackened-steel soffit fascia makes for a crisp termination to the stained cedar tongue-and-groove ceilings. I also like to blur the lines between outside and inside where I can and by bringing the outside ceiling material straight into the space, forming the interior soffits, it provided a natural place to uplight the vault. --Brett Fogelstrom

The Terrace and Vineyard Green

I like to think my architecture makes people feel a heightened sense of 'place'. --Brett Fogelstrom

The material pallet at Ponzi Vineyards starts with concrete. I love concrete. I love big walls. And I like to utilize the material to both anchor a structure such as this addition into the hillside as well as allow it to rise up and contribute as a sheltering wall, or simply a gestural element. --Brett Fogelstrom

Framing a view at the Ponzi Vineyards site is as simple as making an opening in a wall in any direction, it's all so beautiful. --Brett Fogelstrom
